When life hands you lemons, toss them in the trash and eat cake

About this Blog

I first started this blog in October 2011 after 1) my boyfriend of 3+ years dumped me 10 days before I was supposed to move into his house, which was 100 miles away from my current location; and 2) I subsequently had a One-Flew-Over-the-Cuckoos-Nest mental breakdown and voluntarily checked myself into a local mental hospital for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

It’s now May 2012, and after a 4-month blog hiatus, I’ve decided to come back. Adding to the upheaval of the past 8 months, I just got laid off from my corporate (soul-sucking) writing job, and I’m currently on the job-hunting hamster wheel. I will have to start drawing unemployment soon, which will not cover the cost of my espresso habit… or more importantly, my rent. I am terrified, coupled with the fact that I’m dealing with chronic depression and generalized anxiety disorder, which has plagued me for 20 years.

I refuse to let all of the above be a recipe for disaster, a recipe that will send me plunging back down into the rabbit hole. Instead, I want to share my struggles and path to living with my mental condition in the most gentle, honest and humorous possible way, and in the process, remove the stigma surrounding those who suffer from mental illness. (We’re insane, but we’re funny, fabulous, and really cute. And did I mention smart?) I also want to chronicle the pitfalls and humor of the the horror we call the job hunt. Believe me, there is so much to laugh about in between the crying jags. Last but not least, I may throw some fiction out there for your enjoyment: I’m an aspiring novelist and, hell, if I can’t get published in The New Yorker, I’ll self-publish here.

My life may not be how I envisioned it would be, but I’m beginning to learn that it’s all about the journey, not the destination point. So join me on my journey to find sanity and a job. Hopefully, along the way, I will finally learn how to happily lick the icing off the crazy cake.

  1. It is amazing how similar our intentions were in starting our respective blogs. I found out my boyfriend was cheating on me days before valentine’s day and our 3 year anniversary. As I was making plans to move 300 miles to be with him.

Guys shouldn’t be allowed to get under the skin of strong women.

    • Agreed. Sorry to hear you’ve gone through a similar situation… but at least there is comfort in numbers. And I truly believe if I had moved, it would’ve been a disaster. I dodged a big fat bullet. You did, too.
